Hover A Novel Anne A Wilson Books

This is clearly a semi-autobiographical novel, which due to author Anne Wilson's background, makes this an authentic military action thriller. While the plot became a bit far-fetched, it retained enough realism to keep my interest all the way to the end. While I'm not a Navy guy, I've spent enough time in military rotary wing aircraft to appreciate the excellent technical and sensory details Ms. Wilson includes to season her story.

I can easily see "Hover" as the first book in a series, though it'll be a tough mission to top Wilson's debut novel.

Hover A Novel Anne A Wilson Books Reviews

I'm not sure if the kindle price is a great reflection of this book, but I am sure that I don't regret spending the $8. It's a little steep when compared to other kindle books--and I read a ton of books.

So the story is definitely not what I expected, and I really appreciated the real life experience the author has as a helo pilot. I feel like that experience makes her unique among military romance authors. The story flowed so well and the plot kept building to create a page turning second half.

The hero and heroine, Eric and Sara, were both individually incredible people, and seeing them come together was fun. I also think this author allowed room for character growth across the entire novel. Sara at the beginning was a very different Sara from the end. I love when books have this arc. When you fall in love, there is no way you can stay the same if it's real. Love changes you. And if it doesn't, and if there is no growth or maturity, then it's not real. This book clearly shows that.

Definitely recommend! Not overly romantic (I hate when there are so many sex scenes that you have to skip ten pages at a time to get to the actual plot) but was sweet and loving with the perfect amount of love. Suspenseful and action packed!
I liked this story very much and want to offer encouragement to this author for writing about what she knows. This has all the components of a good story; relatable characters with suspenseful action packed scenes. Lt Sara Henning and her roommate/friend Lt Emily Wyatt are only female H-46 helicopter pilots on the USS Kansas City as part of the Nimitz carrier group; they are so opposite in personalities. Emily is outgoing and likes being a girl while Sara is more serious subscribing to the "small dot theory" (do your best job, don't make waves blend in be the small dot). Lt Cdr Nick Claggett is the OIC of their detachment but is not a fan of women as Navy pilots so makes life a little difficult for Sara. When she makes a difficult landing in their H-46 that is filling up with smoke onto a smaller ship; Claggett is coughing and can't help. She is guided by Petty Officer Kyle Legossi (Lego) one of the crew members who can see the landing pad better. They all land safely but Claggett refuses to commend her skill and is pretty much a jerk. She meets Lt Eric Marxen who helps her while the aircraft is being repaired. The other secondary characters Lego and Messie, the crew she likes to fly with, are both from Alabama so they are truly funny and so likeable. The helo dunker experience was priceless but Sara had a near drowning experience 9 yrs earlier where her twin brother Ian was killed so there is some underlying issues she thinks she had dealt with. I liked the way the author described and explained various technical aspects of being a Navy helicopter pilot without getting to far into the weeds. I worked with the Army and have flown in CH-47s and UH-60s (H-46 and H-60) so I could identify with the confirmation of the aircraft as to where pilots & aircrew are situated & function. A pilot who can fly a "buttonhole" maneuver is a badass pilot (we had a few of those in the Army National Guard flying in Afghanistan). Sara and Emily are deployed on an 8 month cruise to the Western Pacific with stops in Hong Kong then Singapore. Lt Marxen seems to be more than what he appears on the surface; Sara has been requested to be the main pilot for the training missions with the SEAL teams and Australian SAS teams during their training exercises. This is involving lowering men onto fast moving ships under cover of darkness with little navigational help; all must be done within seconds to avoid detection by the enemy. All in preparation for a larger mission. Lt Cdr Clagget has a problem with this but can't do anything about it (neither can Sara). The relationship between Sara & Eric grows although she knows ship board romances are a big taboo. Eric also has a mission with the SEAL teams but he wants to protect Sara when they want her to fly the dangerous and highly secretive mission to thwart a plan to kill a former US president. This a good read for men or women lots of action and danger as well as romance that both can't fight. diamondgirl
I’ve eagerly anticipated this debut novel since I first saw a blurb about it several weeks ago. The author, Anne A. Wilson, is a Naval Academy graduate and former Navy helicopter pilot. My background is similar to hers, and I was excited by the prospect of a military story narrated from a female’s perspective. With high expectations, I began reading.

Hover blew my expectations out of the water.

I read a lot of Women’s Fiction and YA novels, and I often find myself annoyed by, or at least indifferent to, the female protagonists. But I actually like Lt. Sara Denning. Unlike so many female main characters, she isn’t whiny or incapable. She is strong, professional, and excellent at her job. She’s buried her emotions and hidden her femininity to cope with life in the Navy, but I thought she was relatable and found myself invested in her struggles.

Hover is a love story, and Anne knows how to write a great one. She introduces us to Lt. Eric Marxen, a pilot and SEAL flight operations coordinator who, as Sara’s roommate says, looks like he just stepped out of GQ magazine. He is self-assured without being arrogant and protective without being possessive. Eric treats Sara with respect and starts to chip away at the walls she’s built up. You can’t help but sigh a little when he slips her a rubber band to tie back her hair, and it’s clear from the beginning that he’s perfect for her if she’ll just let him in.

As much as I enjoyed the love story, I was surprised to discover that I was equally engaged in the military thriller aspect of Hover. If this had just been a boy meets girl story set in a carrier strike group, it would have been an entertaining read. But in addition to this, there’s a subplot involving Navy SEALs, fast-roping from helicopters, betrayal, and dramatic rescue attempts that kept me turning the pages late into the night.

The writing style is fast-paced and straightforward, with description and backstory woven throughout that fully immersed me in Sara’s world. I felt a little panicked along with Sara in the helo dunker and claustrophobic as she navigated the narrow corridors of the ship. There are enough technical details to add authenticity, but none are so overwhelming that I couldn’t understand what was happening.

Overall, Hover is a fantastic debut that accurately captures the female military experience and transports readers into a thrilling setting with a great cast of secondary characters and lots of suspense. I’d love to see another installment in Sara and Eric’s story and I will definitely read future work from Anne A. Wilson. Highly recommend.
