Helen gets more than she bargains for when she allows her husband to open their marriage. It's an interesting and unique take on a dark thriller, when three becomes a crowd. Prescott writes well, and creates depthful characters. The story started out a bit slow, but makes the reader wonder why such a divide in this marriage. And then the story unravels at a pace perfect for building up the intrigue and intensity of the story. I enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading more from this author.Tags : Killing the Unicorn: A dark domestic thriller about a modern marriage - Kindle edition by Lizella Prescott, Danna Colman. Killing the Unicorn A dark domestic thriller about a modern marriage edition by Lizella Prescott Danna Colman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
First, I have to pick my jaw up off the floor. Now maybe I can process what I just read. I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. It was so crazy. Each new chapter brought on a new layer of insane madness.
I could really feel for Helen. Her post-pregnancy self esteem is at an all time low. When her husband proposes an open marriage she reluctantly agrees hoping it will fix their marital issues. (How the hell that could possibly do that is beyond me.) She feels guilt and is too nice - a lot of times to the point of being a doormat.
Their new 'third,' Julia, seems sweet and sad, having been through tragic events in her recent past. They take her in with a feeling of protecting her and, of course, for Helen's husband, Mann. Finding inconsistencies in her story and background, Helen feels Julia is pretty sketchy. Proving it is a whole other problem. So frustrating!
Helen feels like her life and marriage is circling the drain while Julia moves in to try to take over her husband and her children. It's so scary and frustrating and felt so hopeless. I wasn't sure how this was going to work itself out! Don't even bother trying to figure it out because things twist and turn so fast. You think you know but you have no idea. New craziness unfolds and builds up faster and faster. Keep reading and enjoy the dark crazy ride! I couldn't stop reading! I have bags under my eyes today because I stayed up too late finishing it.
I loved this book and I highly recommend it.
Addictive, chilling, gripping read! This book is full of lies, secrets, deceit, betrayal, and bone-chilling twists. This book has it all! Wow!
From the beginning of the book I found myself deeply immersed in the story and it was such an addictive read that it was very difficult to put down. I devoured this book and flew through it as I page after page.
Imagine being Helen – a married mother of two young children, and feeling lumpy and full of flaws. She doesn’t feel sexy or attractive and doesn’t have it in her to give her husband the intimacy he wants..the intimacy he needs. So agreeing to have an open marriage, she agrees for Mann to begin seeing other women to fulfill his needs.
Helen experiences many different emotions once Mann begins seeing another woman named Julia. They seem to be falling head over heels in love and Helen thinks they are moving way too fast. She experiences doubt about her decision to open her marriage and share her husband, conflicting emotions on whether she is doing the right thing or not, jealousy of watching her husband with other women and watching them kiss and cuddle, among other things.
Helen was an interesting character to read about. She definitely had her flaws, as did all the other characters in the book, but it was interesting to read all the same. Mann seemed to be a great husband and father to his children. He was caring, attentive, and thoughtful of his family.
I enjoyed reading all of the shocking secrets, twists and turns in the book. It was entertaining and addictive to read, and I was curious to see how it would all play out. There were definitely many shocking moments in the book where I was wanting to see what would happen next, especially when Helen begins to doubt Julia and her past. I couldn’t wait to find out if Julia was a threat to the family or not as Helen suspected. Was Helen going crazy herself? or did she have every right to question Julia and her motives?
I definitely did not see the shocking ending come out the way that it did at the end of the book. I loved that twist because for me it was completely unexpected!
This was a wonderful book! Lots of twist and turns! Hope to read more of this author!

Lizella Prescott’s "Killing the Unicorn" impressed me above all with its utter heartlessness and nihilism. Set in the postmodern dystopia that is California, this novel is only superficially a thriller. With relentless precision it lays bare the hideous monsters of the id that lurk behind the smiling facade of postmodern tolerance and license. Dostoevsky wrote that without God, everything is permitted. "Killing the Unicorn," set in just such a world where humanity is the measure of all things, depicts the moral dead end that Dostoevsky foresaw and feared. Ms. Prescott’s is an impressive and sobering vision; I highly recommend her novel .
